The Friends of Jazz believes that live music is healing and therapeutic to the listener. Jazz music, more than any other art form, is known for its infectious joy. To hear jazz is to be enthralled by it.
The Friends of Jazz created the Jazz Around Program, where they played live jazz to people who are unable to attend performances outside of their residences due to various causes, such as:
AgeDisability Immobilityand Illness.
Thanks to grants and other funds, the Jazz Around Program allows the Friends of Jazz to play "in-house" to these people in need at low cost. Some of the places that the Friends of Jazz has played includes nursing homes, veteran's hospitals, senior housing, children's hospitals and at schools for children with disabilities. To have the Friends of Jazz play for your facility, please e-mail performances@friendsofjazznj.org. Three years ago, after playing for a school that specializes in educating children with disabilities, Mr. Young realized that he wanted to make a greater impact on schoolage children. Project: Future Legends was born. Under this program, children receive music enrichment programs that enable them to become the next generation of jazz lovers, and hopefully, musicians. To further this cause, the Friends of Jazz has put on a Talent Probe, in which local children compete to receive free music lessons from a professional musician.
