The Friends of Jazz is a nonprofit organization filled with jazz enthusiasts who believe that music is essential to a well-rounded human being. Founded by blind music ambassador Robert Young, the Friends of Jazz has touched the lives of over 10,000 people in Union, NJ.
The Friends of Jazz brings the joy and healing power of music to the under served, sick, elderly and disabled and seeks to motivate the next generation of jazz musicians and fans. Once under the umbrella of the Black United Fund, the Friends of Jazz grew to become its own nonprofit organization in 2004.
The mission of the Friends of Jazz is to provide music enrichment to students and entertainment to those who cannot attend outside events due to their disabilities or limitations. These populations include, but are not limited to: school-age children, the aged, sick, elderly and disabled.
The talent and enthusiasm of the blind vocalist and trumpeter, Robert Young, is an inspiration to audiences both young and old. As band leader, he and the Friends of Jazz combo has brought a higher dimension of cultural enjoyment to host agencies: like hospitals, nursing homes and schools that specialize in educating disabled children. These agencies normally cannot fund a live music performance for their residents on their own. It is thanks to grants and donations that the Friends of Jazz is able to bring the joy of live music to these residents and students.
